Kanawha County Youth Participate in NYSD


On Oct. 6, youth in Kanawha County participated in the 2010 National Youth Science Day. This year’s experiment taught young people how increased amounts of carbon dioxide can affect aquatic animals, plants and other living organisms in lakes, streams, rivers and oceans. The experiment was conducted by 336 youth. Special thanks to Mary Ingles, Richmond, and Ruthlawn elementary schools and the Charleston Town Center Mall.

Atomic Worms


Youth at The Bob Burdette Center's Calvary Site recently mixed up a batch of Atomic Worms. Atomic Worms introduce youth to the chemistry behind polymers. "Worm Goo" is a long chain of molecules called a polymer. When the "Worm Goo" comes in contact with the "Activator", the goo immediately changes from a liquid to a solid! That’s because the "Activator" acts a cross-linking solution that links the long strands of polymers in the goo together.

As 4-H National Youth Science Day draws near, here are some water conservation facts to ponder:

On average, an American uses 9 gallons of water per minute when they shower.

A family of 8 uses 42,000 gallons of water to grow and prepare the food for a typical Thanksgiving dinner. This is enough to fill a 30 by 50 foot swi...mming pool!

And combined the U.S. uses 700,000,00,000 (700 billion) gallons of water each day.

Upward Bound Students Learn Forensics


On July 6, 2010, Upward Bound students at West Virginia State University participated in forensic science activities. The students learned fingerprint analysis and handwriting analysis.
The activities were conducted by 14 students.

4-H at Pre-College Math & Science Institute



4-H Science activities were recently conducted with 36 youth at the Pre-College Math & Science Institute. The youth participated in fun, hands-on science experiments. During the experiments, youth learned about
  • Forensic science techniques
  • Physical reactions
  • Chemical bonds
  • Surface tension
  • Superabsorbent polymers
  • States of matter

The Pre-College Math & Science Institute is a program of WVSU's Center for the Advancement of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathmatics.

On October 6, 2010, millions of young people across the nation will become scientists during the third annual 4-H National Youth Science Day. STARLAB visits A.D. Lewis Center


STARLAB visited The A.D. Lewis Center in Huntington on May 27. It is a portable planetarium. STARLAB was visited by 146 youth. The youth learned about constellations and the ancient myths associated with them. For more information about this program, contact Paul Henderson at 304-205-7972.

2010 Mullens Dogwood Festival Activity


On May 7, 2010, West Virginia State University Extension Service staff visited the Dogwood Festival in Mullens, WV. Our booth was visited by 203 youth. The youth made artificial snow by adding water to a superabsorbent polymer.


4-H SET is the 4-H program’s response to our nation’s concern for improving human capacity and workforce ability in the areas of science, engineering and technology (SET). It combines non-formal education process, hands-on, and inquiry-based learning in a youth development context to increase literacy and engage youth in improving their knowledge, skills and abilities in science, engineering and technology.
A 4-H SET experience is a program that is framed in science, engineering and technology concepts and based on national science education standards. 4-H SET experiences operate from a perspective that youth are partners and resources in their own development.
4-H SET combines the strengths of 4-H programming, non-formal experiential-based delivery modes with strong youth/adult partnerships to address content as defined by the National Education Science Standards and practice SET abilities in order to prepare our youth to compete in the 21st century workplace.
4-H works from a common framework of a hands-on approach to science, engineering and technology where learning opportunities help youth master life challenges, cultivate independence with guidance from caring adults, provide a sense of belonging within a positive group, and share a spirit of generosity toward others.
